10 Free Tank Top Knitting Patterns

It’s the middle of July and temperatures are soaring. A tank top and shorts are my go-to on a hot summer day, and the best tank tops are ones you knit yourself! I’ve hand-picked 10 free tank top knitting patterns that range from simple and easy to lacy and a bit more complex. If you decide to make any of the tank tops on this list, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

1. Heart on Fire by DROPS Design

The Heart on Fire top has 2 vertical lace panels on the front. There are evenly spaced eyelets on the rest of the top. It has thin spaghetti straps.
  • Size: XS-XXL

What a gorgeous pattern! The lace in the middle of this tank top makes it so cute.

2. Sorvete by Filipa Carneiro

The sorvete top is in stockinette stitch with a slight lace detail along the neckline.
  • Size: S-L

The stockinette stitch body of this pattern is very simple and great for beginners.

3. Dazzling Diamonds Vest by DROPS Design

The Dazzling Diamonds Vest is white and has a diamond lace pattern. It has a v-neck and 4 wooden buttons down the front.
  • Size: S-XXXL

I love the buttons on this tank top. The diamond lace pattern is gorgeous!

4. Notched Hem Tank Top by Purl Soho

The Notched Hem Tank Top's front and back are a couple of inches longer than the sides. It looks like there are 4 panels to the top: the front, back, and 2 sides. The front and back are in stockinette stitch and the sides are in garter stitch.
  • Size: 34 (37, 40, 43, 46). The sizes listed for this tank top are the finished chest circumference in inches. The pattern includes a link to Purl Soho’s sizing guide if you need help choosing a size.

This tank top has a very interesting design. The front and back panels are started separately and then joined in the round where you knit the sides. The complex construction makes this pattern more suited to experienced knitters.

5. Summer Ties by DROPS Design

The Summer Ties top is a lime green color. The front is in stockinette stitch with a thin garter stitch border along each edge. The sides are laced up with a cord and forms a diamond pattern.
  • Size: XS-XL

This is the easiest pattern on this list! You just knit the front and back panels and sew the shoulders together.

6. Summer Vertical Ridges Tank Top by Yarnspirations

The Summer Vertical Ridges top is turquoise. It is in garter stitch with lines of vertical knit ridges. It has a shallow v neck.
  • Size: XS-5XL

I’m loving the texture of this pattern! You could make this tank top in all sorts of colors, but I think the teal yarn used in the picture looks fabulous.

7. Strawberry Summer by DROPS Design

The Strawberry Summer top is a ribbed pink tank top.
  • Size: S-XXXL

Everyone loves a good ribbed tank. The neckline and straps put this pattern over the top!

8. Lacy Knit Tank by Yarnspirations

The Lacy Knit Tank has a horizontal lace pattern on the bottom 3/4 of the tank. Each lace panel is a different color, 5 colors total. The top of the tank is the same color as the bottom lace panel and is in stockinette stitch.
  • Size: XS-5XL

This tank top has beautiful lace with color blocking. I like the scalloped hem.

9. Seaside Spirals by DROPS Design

The Seaside Spirals top is in plain stockinette stitch. It has ribbing on the bottom and the straps have a twisted, cabled look.
  • Size: XS-XXL

This pattern features cabled straps and an i-cord neckline. I think it has quite an elegant look for a tank top.

10. Racerback Tank by Premier Yarns

The Racerback Tank is in a plain stockinette stitch. It uses variegated yarn that I assume is self striping. It is a lavender color with dark purple, pink, and yellow stripes.
  • Size: S-XXXL

This simple tank top is perfect for showing off a fun yarn.
